Beyond four walls, tells the story of Anjalay - a flower seller living on the streets of Chennai, in south India. She continues to live in the same place that her grandparents lived, on Parry's corner, doing the same thing that they did - making and selling flower garlands. She lives there with an extended family of 15 people, despite being given a house by the state government as part of a low income urban housing scheme. As the matriarch of the family, she choses to continue to live in a blue tent, on the street because moving to a different location would mean that she would lose her source of income. "Home" for Anjalay is more than just four walls - it is social support, livelihood, familiarity and independence.
Housing in a city, especially for women, is not a physical structure. Anjalay preferred living closer to where she works, a school and a hospital instead of going to live in state provided housing. The state housing was planned and implemented and even allocated to the poor people with no consultations with them.
